The Rainy River District School Board is taking action early this school year to address persistant student absenteism.
It introduced the "I'm Here" campaign.
Board spokesperson Heather Latter says it came out of a meeting of regional educational leaders when they discussed the issue in the spring.
The most recent stats show 21 per cent of students across northwestern Ontario missed at least 10 per cent of the days there were expected to be in class in 2014.
Latter says there are many reasons why students will miss class that often, including for medical or mental health reasons, sporting events and family commitments.
Latter says the campaign aims to bring awareness to students, as well as parents, teachers and the community as a whole, of the importance of students attending classes on a regular bases.
